‘Mom told me that my 17-year-old sister had been secretly smoking, asking me to intervene. So I made this book—one that, in truth, has little to do with cigarettes. Through its pages, I seek to uncover the reasons behind her smoking.’

Family, school, the forgotten corners of a small town, an environment where paths to social mobility are scarce, and dreams of the future grow dim—these elements gradually revealed to me the disillusionment of sisters like mine, who neither trust the promises made by education at home and school nor possess the imagination to envision a future, caught instead in a quiet despair.
